Worn through rather than cut open. The damage here is abrasion — patches sanded down until the weave gave way, torn edges left soft and fibrous, and a section above the knee rubbed thin enough to see light through before it broke.

• Machine wash cold in a mesh bag, inside out
• Do not bleach
• Hang dry
• Do not tumble dry — abraded denim keeps giving way
• Back a spreading patch with iron-on mesh from the reverse
• Trim loose hem threads rather than pulling them
• Wash on their own for the first few washes
• Do not dry clean
